(Reader Contribution to
10 Greatest Imposters in History)
Han Van Meegeren was a con artists who fool the nazis into spending over 50 million on paintings he himself had forged claiming they belonged to the influential dutch painter Johannes Vermeer. He not only fooled the nazis but also very important art critics. Only when he was arrested under the accusation of helping the nazis did he finally come clean. Recently his story has been turned into a book by Frank Wynne.
